UNAI KOREA, held the Ground breaking Ceremony of “Ban Ki-moon Global Education Institute in Support of UNAI"
The United Nations Academic Impact Korea and Handong Global University held the Ground breaking Ceremony of “Ban Ki-moon Global Education Institute in Support of UNAI (hereafter, GEI)” at Handong University located in Pohang on July 11. The ceremony was attended by Ban Ki-moon (The 8th UN Secretary-General), Young-Gil Kim (Chairman of UNAI Korea), Soon-heung Chang (President of Handong Global University), Hyun Cho (Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs), and Ramu Damodaran (Chief of UNAI, Deputy Director of UN DPI). Various participants from universities, international organizations, and government officials also attended the ceremony.
Ban Ki-moon UNAI Global Education Center (GEI), as a specialized agency in fostering global citizenship education, is established to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals which are all agreed to implement together in the global society. Under the goal of institution, GEI plans to implement a "Global Convergence Education" programs that include
s several disciplines and leadership education. GEI also carries forward exchange programs on internship, research and education with international organizations such as UN, UNESCO and OECD and worldwide 1,200 UNAI member universities.
In GEI, there will be Handong Grace School and Ban Ki-moon Sustainable Development International Research Center. Handong Grace School will implement and spread global citizenship education to cultivate global leaders by transforming the mindset as well as building necessary skills. Ban Ki-moon Sustainable Development International Research Center will research and educate to provide innovative solutions to attain UN SDGs in cooperation with UNAI member universities and international organizations.
The 8th UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in his encouragement remarks, said, "As a person who served as UN secretary-general, I am delighted to join this global education initiative and look forward to promoting it.”, “Ban Ki-moon Global Education Center, which will be established in the future, will produce creative global experts representing Korea in international organizations and global society through innovative Global Convergence Education and I hope that young people from all over the world will show their competence in various fields of global society, especially in the field of international development cooperation through GEI."
In addition, the current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent the congratulatory messages. On behalf of him, the Chief of UNAI of UN DPI, Ramu Damodaran read, "The opportunity to enjoy an inclusive and equitable quality education is a prerequisite for improving lives and ensuring sustainable development”, “Thanks to UNAI, established by my distinguished predecessor Ban Ki-moon, and Handong Global University, I believe it will play an important role in developing and sharing educational framework through Ban Ki-moon GEI this time."
