The 3rd Global Citizenship Education Outreach 2018, in Cambodia
The United Nations Academic Impact Korea (UNAI Korea) hosted 'The 3rd Global Citizenship Education Outreach' as part of its effort to strengthen the capacity of university students for enhancing global citizenship education (GCED). The outreach was hold from July 1st to 8th (for 8 days), in NIBI, Siem Reap, Cambodia. The major programs included the mentoring program on GCED and the project on sustainable city development.
The mentoring program on GCED inspired local students in NIBI and enabled them to develop a framework for understanding and discussing 17 goals of UN Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDGs) in the lens of global citizenship. The student-led program was developed and localized by participants of UNAI Aspire Korea who took pre-trainings provided by UNAI Korea.
The project on sustainable city project was carried out to define the issues of residential environment in Cambodia, analyze them by the perspective of UN SDGs and develop the sustainable solutions. The project draw out the feasible solutions with the active participation of students in research and discussion. As the pre-workshop of the project, students also visited Habitat Siem reap and had an occasion to understand various cases of local projects.
Dr. Ducksu Seo (President of NIBC) who led the project on sustainable development said that “The results of the student-led project were higher than expected, due to the interactive discussion among students from various countries.” He made an overall evaluation on the project that “The experience during the project would allow students to grow global citizens who understand global issues more inclusively and mutually.
Ms. Myungju Song (Participant from Chung-Ang University) said that “It was a unique experience to visit local villages and interview people. It brought new perspectives on global development both locally and globally.” Ms. Soohyun Lim also said that “I learned the importance of the concept of GCED and it should be shared with more students.”
The whole programs of the outreach was developed and implemented by UNAI Korea with a number of experts. UNAI Korea will continuously expend the outreach to strengthen the capacity of university students and promote Holistic GCED.
